Character: Raiden (aka Jack, Jack the Ripper, Mr. Lightning Bolt)
Series: Metal Gear
Age: mid-30s
History: here
Canon Point: post Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Personality: Raiden was raised as a child solider capable of killing on demand; this was a past that until quite recently in his adult life he was unaware of because of drug-induced memory suppressants. This barbaric upbringing caused Raiden to put on a cold and standoffish attitude towards others as he subconsciously suffered from a deep-seated paranoia that he would "accidentally" hurt those he cared for. When he eventually remembered his repressed childhood he suffered heavily from terrible guilt and PTSD and still exhibits signs of the condition.
Now that Raiden is aware of his childhood, and is more or less comfortable in talking about it, he considers it to be the root of all of his social anxieties and makes it his personal mission to prevent any other child having to be subjected to similar treatment.
While Raiden may not be terribly comfortable in social situations he is a good solider on the battlefield; efficient and dedicated his only setback when it comes to tactics is that he has moments where his emotions impede his judgement. He often shifts mission objectives to fit his own moral choices and at times he goes against direct orders or laws for his own ideals.
A competent fighter he often boasts about his own abilities; in game he is often found bragging about how good he is at stealth or how easily opponents are defeated. The majority of the time this arrogance seems genuine but at times there is an element of frivolity to it that hints at a good-natured sense of humour. However, what sense of humour Raiden does have is usually expressed in sarcastic quips or teasing comments; which he can give much better than he can receive. At one point when he's teased for having a little too much admiration for Solid Snake he becomes very defensive and eventually leaves the conversation without ending it properly.
Throughout the game Raiden has the opportunity to speak with his colleagues a lot; all of whom offer him valuable tactical and operational advice. However, they also speak to him about social matters too. One of the most prominent topics of conversation is how everyone is going to go out together when this ordeal is over. Raiden agrees to all invitations offered by every single team member which hints at possible signs of loneliness.
Towards the end of Metal Gear Rising Raiden reaches further back into his troubled past and recalls the blood-lust he experienced when killing as a child. This memories surface an alter-ego known as "Jack the Ripper"; creating a textbook split personality. Raiden; the cool, sarcastic but essentially honourable soldier and Jack the Ripper; a psychotic, bloodthirsty psychopath. It takes Raiden some time to accept that there is a part of him that really likes killing.
Skills and Abilities:
There's a thud, a vibration, and the picture can finally focus. Breathing still heavy the angle of the camera tilts towards the floor; legs and a torso are visible. A moment passes and the display looks left, right, then left again. ]
Damn it! [ finally a voice to put to the display ] I lost them again.
Third Person Sample: Raiden's fingers slowly, mechanically, began to close around those swollen discs of luminous blue fluid. Even in this body he could feel the pressure in it build as he did so. Then a sudden urge overtook him and in a split second he burst the fake spinal chord, neon electrolyte liquid splattering over his hand and forearm, whatever useful materials in it absorbing instantaneously into his body. Words couldn't express quite how satisfying that feeling was and he took a second to appreciate the sensation.
He was surrounded by bodies, not just limp corpses, but severed arms and legs, torsos flung from hips and chunks of meat, blood and organs littered the dusty pavement wetting the harsh environment. Raiden's eye narrowed, it wasn't here. They weren't here. His brow furrowed in frustration as he attempted to calculate his next move, but before he could form a plan of action a high-pitched ringing sounded inside his head.
The familiar voice of one of his comrades echoed and Raiden nodded a few times before grumbling back his response, he wasn't able to mask his annoyance "Yeah, I know. But we're running out of time!" and with that he disconnected the call.

Skills and Abilities:
- Tactics: Raiden has been trained in the art of war since he was a child, he is a capable soldier; well versed in tactical strategies and various methods of combat.
- Strength / Speed / Stamina / Dexterity: Thanks to his "new body" Raiden is a lot faster, stronger and more agile than the average human. His is able to take a lot more physical punishment and with the right sources his cyborg body is able to heal / replenish itself with little maintenance.
- Durability: With regular check ups Raiden doesn't suffer from the same issues that the average man might have; e.g. physical illnesses (ranging from colds to cancer). When his pain inhibitors were turned on he could quite easily withstand blows that would put most people into shock - such as losing one or two arms.
- Swordsmanship: He is a skilled swordsman following the methodology of katsujinken ("sword that gives life") and issatsu tasho ("one life to save a thousand") philosophies that originated from Japanese Buddhism
- Technical Abilities: Alongside his tactical knowledge Raiden is comfortable handling more than just a sword; he can perform a range of military actions ranging from planting C4 explosives to launching rockets.
- Electrical Abilities: Raiden's body conducts a huge amount of energy and at times it discharges in small electrical currents, this is most noticeable when he pushes himself to his physical limit (for example, when he runs as fast as he can small charges are conducted into the floor).
